The In Defense of Human Rights and Dignity Movement (iDEFEND) vehemently opposes the "Urgent Request for Interim Release" filed by Defence for former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte ('Duterte') on June 12, 2025.

Duterte's interim release poses a serious risk to the victims of the war on drugs. Considering Duterte's massive resources and influence in the Philippines, his release will embolden Duterte sympathizers to further harass, demoralize the victims in the Philippines. Moreover, his unhampered access to information and communication will further exacerbate the havoc to the current political situation in the country.

Duterte's detention serves as a symbol of hope and justice for the tens of thousands of victims in the Philippines. His release will compromise the trust of the victims in the International Criminal Court ("ICC") as an institution of justice. Hence, Duterte does not deserve to be released considering that detention pales in comparison to the atrocities that he committed against the Filipino people.
